A
fair portion of the area to be mined is an extensive marsh rimmed with
cottonwoods and grown up in rushes and other marsh vegetation,
Pssessment of impact:
numerous
species of
ducks
hair woodpec:~:==
brown thrzs~a_s
magpie
barn swallo~.s
small biros
chorus leo~a::
bull frogs
bull snakes
coachwhip sr.=_~'.a
prairie rztt=_-
sna:~:e
assorted liz.=:
The riparian habitat in the mined area would be lost; at leas[ for a number of years.
The area is presently densely vegetated and is inhibiting a northward-progressing in
the Arkansas River From doing extensive erosion. The loss of the mature cottonwoods
and marsh area would be unfortunate as these vegetative types are declining. This area
of the river and the marsh is fairly heavily used in the fall and winter by migrating
and w tering waterfowl and as a resting and feeding area for herons. A buffer of 50 feet
vine Rec~ama[ion recommendations (include key species/habitats for which restoration
is designed).
may be insufficient
to revent the
Excavated areas should be sloped 3:1 as a safety measure for river from erodi^=
humans. The area on the north end of the tract away from the into the mined ara=.
riparian vegetation should be recovered with topsoil and
reseeded per. SCS recommendations. The riparian area should
be allowed to revegetate with cottonwood.
:~- ~~d~
Prepared By: Ronald D.
