Loop 820 Suite 109 Hurst, Texas 76052
December 15, 1981
Mr. Robert Shukle
Colorado Department of Health
Water Quality Control Division
4210 East 11th Avenue
Denver, Colorado 80220
Re: Water Discharge Permit - Peacock
Coal Mine Near Hesperus, Colorado
Dear Mr. Shukle:
The Peacock Coal Mine is a small underground coal mining operation
approximately 4 miles southwest of Hesperus, Colorado along County Road
120. The mine has been in operation for over 70 years with only 7 acres
affected for surface facilities. We provide lump and stoker coal to
nearby residents and businesses.
Recently, as part of an upgrade of a mining and reclamation permit to
the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division, we submitted a detailed
plan for a sedimentation pond to control runoff from the surface
facility area. This pond will serve to collect surface runoff from our
affected area. No water has ever been discharged from our underground
workings.
We would like to receive a Water Discharge Permit from your agency in
conjunction with the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System
(NPDES). Attached for your reference is a map showing the approximate
discharge location for our sedimentation pond. This pond will be built
in the near future.
We visited with Mr. Don Simpson of your office; he is sending us the
necessary forms to fill out. Thank you for your attention to this
matter. If you have any questions, or desire additional information,
please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
SUNBELT MINING, INC.
.ClrTohn ~~~ce
John Pr a Presi nt
JP:sly
Attachment
