Seed Mixes and Planting Lists Four seed mixes have been developed for permanent
revegetation of the II-W and II-W South permit areas and the Tie-Across Haul Road. In
addition, a mix of small grains for use as a cover crop and a mix of native shrubs species to be
sown alone to generate shrub islands have been developed. Also included here are lists of tree
and shrub species to be used in direct nursery stock planting areas again intended to establish
shrub islands.
Initial considerations in the development of the permanent mixes and seedling (nursery stock)
lists included the anticipated reclaimed area site conditions and the desired revegetation
communities. Specific goals which factored into the permanent seed mixes and seedling lists
included rapid and long-term surface stabilization, ease of establishment, maximum use of
native species, adequate species diversity, high levels of utility for livestock and wildlife, good
forage production potential, compatibility with naturally regenerating native species present in
replaced topsoil, and the ability to be self-sustaining or compliment successional processes in
the reclaimed plant communities. Attainment of these goals, in turn, facilitates achievement of
the postmining land uses.
To finalize the plant materials lists, dominant or commonly occurring species identified in the
Seneca II-W and II-W South Extension area vegetation baseline studies were evaluated for
inclusion in the seed mixes or planting lists. The list of these species was further refined to
include the more desirable li.e., no noxious or strong increaser species) or high utility species.
Realistic and consistent market availability was a strong selection criterion for all potential
species and varieties. Included species which were not present in vegetation baseline studies
were added to aid in achievement of the revegetation goals specified earlier. Finally, analysis
of revegetation monitoring data collected at the Seneca II Mine since 7985 and review of
pertinent revegetation literature was performed. The resulting information provided insights
into seeded species performance, seeding rates, stand composition, planting rates and survival
percentages, and the degree to which natural regeneration compliments the seed mixes.
Seed Mix No. 7 (Table 22-11 has been designed for all reclaimed upland sites and ephemeral
drainages on the mine area. It will be used for upland areas on the tie-across haul road. The
23 species contained in the mix are adapted to a broad range of site conditions
PR03 13 Revised 11/02
