f , • •
Page Two
United Companies
2-1-94
In addition, the Uncompahgre River has improved dramatically as a
trout fishery in recent years with the completion of Ridgway
Reservoir. There is potential for impacting water quality from
run-off at the asphalt and excavation site or infiltration of
contaminants associated with the operation. Obviously, the area
is predominantly deposited alluvial material which is highly
susceptible to downward migration of contaminated fluids. It is a
very short distance from the operation to contamination of the
Uncompahgre River. Protective measures are necessary to insure
contaminants will be contained and siltation from site
disturbance will be contained during storm events.
We concur with United Companies's proposal to leave the riparian
vegetation located on the eastern portion of the property
undisturbed. This will provide a buffer between the operation
and some of the river habitats.
We appreciate the opportunity to provide input on this project.
As rapid growth occurs in this area, it is paramount that all
agencies, governmental organizations and citizens work together
to reduce the impacts of development on the valuable natural
resources.
If you have further questions concerning the wildlife resources
in this area, please feel free to contact District Wildlife
Manager Maurice Potter or myself at 249-3431.
Sincerely,
it.~ ~"-~
Rick Sherman
Wildlife Biologist
cc: Clark
Potter
