Box 269
Alamosa, CO 81101
ATT: Bob Plaska
Dear Bob:
-~
-: , _ ,~, ~
t_: .

Asphalt Constructors, Inc. has a mining operation located
approximately one mile west of Ft. Garland, CO in the NE 1/4, Sec
20, T30S., R72W., known as the Smith Pit. Our records indicate
mining has occurred here since at least 1973.
We have held the mining permit since 1988, and I have been
involved with the pit since 1984 with the previous operator.
During the summer of 1993 we encountered minor water percolation
in the NE corner of the pit. The water was retained along the
north boundary and disappeared during early fall. At Wayne
Williams request, I visited your office and we discussed possible
causes and solutions. No actions were taken because of the lack
of history of the problem.
During July, 1994, water began seeping again into the northeast
corner of the pit. The water comes in on the east slope
approximately 2' above the floor elevation in this corner. The
pit floor has a gentle slope to the west and the water flows to
the west where it becomes retained by the west face of the pit.
Be aware that no water comes up through the pit floor, only out
of the east slope of the pit.
Equal Opportunity Employer
