• In the mid-1920's CFBI surrendered its lead in the district to the Victor-
American Fuel Co. Its Chandler Mine was an excellent producer; it
remained the county's largest until it closed in 1940. But Victor-
America was merely getting a bigger share of a smaller pie. Production
in the county was plummeting. During the late 1920's and 1930's the old,
big mines closed. Many small ones opened, but being only wagon mines,
they could not replace the lost production. By 1940, the area had 55 coal
mines, 14 of which had "Canon" as the first word of their name. The mines
were similarly undistinguished."
Archaeological and Historic Resource Sites - (Mine Areal
A file search of the Colorado Inventory of Cultural Resources, for the
Southfield mine area by the Colorado State Historical Society - Office of
Archaeology and Historic Preservation, revealed a survey by the CMLRD
identifying 15 sites as possible historic sites in the vicinity of the
mine area. Of the 15 sites, only six (6) are within the mine permit area;
Sites 5FN.699, 5FN.700, 5FN.701, 5FN.827, 5FN.828, and 5FN.829. All of
these sites were assessed as officially not eligible for listing as
historic sites. Assessment documentation is provided in Exhibit 6,
Cultural and Historic Resource Information.
In addition, Dorchester contracted with the Grand River Institute to
conduct a full coverage cultural resources inventory within the Southfield
Mine surface disturbance area. The survey resulted in identification of
no cultural resources within the survey area. This report is presented
in Exhibit 6, Cultural and Historic Resource Information.
Archaeological and Historic Resource Sits (Loadout Area)
The search of the Colorado Inventory of Cultural Resources for the Loadout
area, revealed a survey by Susan N. Riches, Department of Anthropology,
Ft. Lewis College, completed in 1978, which identified 14 sites in the
vicinity of the Loadout area as possible historic sites. Of the 14 sites
• none were within the Loadout permit area. However, one site, 5 FN.163 is
located near the south permit boundary. This site is located on the
ridgeline south of the railroad cut for the AT&SF spur line. EFCI does
2.04.4-4
