Blast Vibration Analysis: Proposed MMRR Quarry
Page 7
One critical component of the Duall Odor Control System is a fan/motor combination manufactured
' by New York Blowerb. Their operations manual notes that fan problems may be caused by
"excessive vibration" and "externally transmitted vibration: '
Suspended Equipment - a number of components throughout the plant, notably air handling
equipment, are suspended from the ceiling. While typically less massive than floor-mounted
equipment, they are nonetheless highly susceptible to swinging when subjected to horizontal
acceleration. The installed vertical bracing was not designed to, and cannot adequately restrain these
devices from additional blast-induced horizontal forces. Suspended components including air
handlers, ductwork, fans, lighting, etc. would have to be reevaluated to determine their vulnerability
to additional horizontal loads. Additional bracing in both horizontal directions as well as additional
vertical bracing (to increase resistance to an upward movement) may be required throughout the
plant'.
Ultraviolet Disinfection -the final step in the wastewater treatment process is disinfection.
' Pathogen destruction is a key component ofwastewater treatment and thus a basic element of public
health. It is an especially important consideration when the receiving water body (North Clear
Creek) is eventually used as a drinking water source by the Standley Lake Cities.
The BHCCSD plant utilizes iJV light8 as its disinfectant. iJV lamps are housed within quartz
sleeves in a horizontal array. Precise alignment and calibration of the lamp assembly is required to
assure effective pathogen kill. The warranty document for the lamp assembly explicitly states,
`...any excess vibration...shall void this warranty" Excessive shock or vibration to the UV lamp
' assembly represents a potentially adverse impact to its proper operation and may void the warranty
held by BHCCSD. Failure of the LIV system would result in dischazge ofpathogens to North Cleaz
Creek and present a potential health risk.
1
e The New York Blower Company, 7660 Quincy Street, Willowbrook, Illinois 60527
Applied Technology CounciUStructural Engineers Association of Southern California Briefing Paper No. 5
s TrojanIIV3000TMPlus, Trojan Technologies Inc., 3020 Gore Rd, London, Ontario, Canada, NSV 4T7
©Leonard Rice Engineers, Inc.
