Martinez, removed coal from the area for domestic use prior to the commencement of <br />• surface coal mining operations. More recently, the Colorado Department of Highways <br />utilized the coal for road surfacing during the winter months. The Chimney Rock Mine <br />began surface mining operations in November 1976 under a Limited Impact Permit issued <br />by the CMLRD. Surface mining operations have removed any remnants of the old <br />underground mines. The Chimney Rock Mine continued mining operations under the <br />authority of a Regular Permit issued by the CMLRD in June 1979 and reissued under the <br />states permanent program on January 7, 1983. This permit was renewed for an additional <br />Sve-year period on April 15, 1988. <br />Reclamation <br />Kaiser Steel Resources is greatly concerned about protection and preservation of land <br />resources. A commitment has been made, through assets, and vested interest, to the <br />preservation and improvement, where possible, of land values. Sound, practical reclamation <br />goals provide the foundation for preservation and improvement. <br />Reclamation goa]s for the proposed mine area will be to return the land surface to <br />rangeland, pastureland and wildlife habitat which is consistent with premising uses. <br />Additional information which discusses the mine and reclamation of the area is presented <br />under 2.04 and 2.05. <br />• <br /> <br />• -3- <br />
