A soil map and for SCS-Soils-2c giving soil description and
interpretations is enclosed. Descriptions of the associated soils,
Nunn clay loam, Table Mountain association and Larkson stony loam
are also enclosed.
The pit has been used many years, and much of the mined out area has
been rehabilitated to some extent.
Vegetation on the Nederland soil ad,)acent to the gravel pit is domin-
ated by western wheatgrass (Agropyron smithii), slimflower scurf-pea
(Bouteloua curtipendula), and blue grams (Bouteloua gracilus). Smaller
amounts of squirrel tail (Sit anion hystrix), Kentucky bluegrass (Poa
pratensis ), sedge (Carex spp.), needle and thread grass (Stipa comata)
and Junegrass (Koeleria cristata) are the grass or grasslike plants
present. Small clumps of Gambel oak (Quercus gambelii) and American
plum (Prunus americans) are the shrubby plants present. Annual weeds
make up a small percent of the composition.
Areas of the pit that are apparently mined out have been reseeded.
The most abundant species present is yellow sweetclover. Small amounts
of crested wheatgrass (Agropyron desertorum), smooth brome (Bromus
inermis), orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata) and slender wheatgrass
(Agropyron trachycaulum) are present. Annual weeds make up about 25~
of the composition.
As new areas of the gravel pit are opened up, we recommend stockpiling
as much of the topsoil as possible. As an area is mined out, it can
be smoothed down and the topsoil spread over it. The recommended
species, varieties and seeding rates for reseeding are:
0
