• contour furrowed using a chisel plow or similar equipment. Next, the
permanent rangeland seed mixture will be planted through either
broadcasting or broadcasting and drilling in combination. Seeding
operations will be undertaken as soon as is operationally possible after
the conclusion of contour furrowing. This timing allows the initial
natural weathering of soil materials that commences immediately following
the furrowing operation to realize maximum soil coverage of broadcast
seeds. The seed application rate will be at approximately 20 P.L.S. per
square foot using either application method. When broadcasting is used
exclusively in planting operations, the seed mixture will be applied using
a Vicon seeder or similar equipment. This type of broadcaster is capable
of applying the entire seed mixture in a single application and is the
preferred seeding method.
When broadcasting and drilling are used to plant in combination,
several types of planting implements will be used. Submixtures of the
permanent seed mixture will be applied through these separate planting
implements. This is necessary because of mechanical limitations inherent
in standard drilling equipment and the diverse physiological
characteristics of the native species seeds contained in the seed mixture.
The permanent seed mixture will be separated into three Submixtures based
• on seed size and the presence of seed appendages (i.e., excessive hairs,
long awns, uniquely developed paleas or lemmas, etc.). Examples of the
Submixtures are contained in Table 9.9-4.
Submixture No. 1 contains species that have 800,000 or fewer seeds
per pound and which lack specialized seed appendages that have the
potential to interfere with even distribution of the seed. Submixture No.
1 will be drilled using the main seed box on the rangeland drill, a no-till
drill or similar equipment. Submixtures Nos. 2 and 3 will be broadcast
using various types of broadcasters, either singly or in combination. The
Vicon broadcaster, tractor mounted electric broadcasters or other similar
equipment may be used to apply Submixtures Nos. 2 and 3. Submixture No. 2
is composed of extremely small seeded species (i.e., 600,000 or more seeds
per pound) and normally will contain an extender so that proper metering of
the application rate of this mixture through the broadcaster may be
obtained. Submixture No. 3 will contain those species which have seed
appendages or other characteristics which inhibit their even distribution
through the rangeland drill. When necessary, the addition of soil
amendments to these areas will be accomplished either before, during or
after planting operations, depending upon the recommended method and timing
• of application for the particular nutrients to be added.
Renewal-3 9.9-15 June 13, 1997
