inscription into the backfilled gully. Other methods for gully
• stabilization include the use of barriers, check dams, and erosion stops.
Treatments such as these can be accomplished with the use of straw bales,
rock, wood, Wettings, or mattings. These or other devices will be installed
within the actual rill or gully channel and will serve to both dissipate the
water flow and to allow sedimentation to occur upslope of the barriers.
Ultimately, vegetation will establish in the rills or gullies and will
assist in the soil stabilization.
Another method to decrease the water flow and to dissipate its erosive
energy is to provide a roughened surface at the bottom of the gully
channels. This can be accomplished by placing matting, rocks, tree and
shrub debris, or other material in channel bottoms.
The surface can also be roughened by ripping the base, which may
facilitate mixing the coarser, rocky material of the spoil material with the
gully bottom.
The area upslope of excessive rills and gullies can also be manipulated
• to decrease the amount of water flowing into existing rills and gullies.
Such techniques include contour furrowing, staggered furrows, spreader
dikes, diversion ditches, ripping and mulching. These dispersion techniques
may also be used down-slope of or over the regraded rills and gullies.
Again, one or a combination of the previously mentioned techniques may be
implemented for the repair of excessive rills and gullies.
Diversion ditches may be installed in some instances to channel
overland flow away from newly reclaimed areas. Diversion ditches will be
constructed as outlined in agls 24-8 through 24-9 of this Exhibit.
Each spring and possi le into summer, Colorado Yampa Coal Company will
initiate a rill and gully s rvey across the reclamation of Mine No. 3. The
monitoring of select ri lls and gullies will occur at that time as well. The
gully survey will begin as soon as weather conditions allow, which will
likely be in mid May. Locations of gullies will be denoted on maps along
with any applicable notes and descriptions. Repair and monitoring work
24-5
