<br />~F ~ ~{~ Unitetl States <br />1 Department of <br />Agriculture <br />August 6, 1982 <br />~;l 690 Industrial Boulevard <br />Conservation Delta <br />Service Colorado 81416 <br />Colorado Westmoreland <br />C/0 Kathy Gordon <br />Box E <br />Paonia, Colorado 81428 <br />Phone 527-4135 Ext. 214 <br />Dear Miss Gordon: <br />Our discussion today was about the soils and potential agricultural <br />production in the valley near the Colorado Westmoreland well field <br />and pump house on Stevens Gulch road. <br />There are approximately 20 acres of native meadow which is in a long <br />rather narrow area of the valley, The elevation is approximately <br />7700 feet above mean sea level. <br />The soils have been identified in the Paonia Area Soil Survey, January <br />1981, as Delson loam on 3 to 12 percent slopes. This is a deep, nor- <br />mally well drained soil. Permeability is slow, and available water <br />capacity is high, Effective rooting depth is 60 inches or more. <br />Surface run-off is medium. The hazard of erosion from wind is slight <br />and from water is moderate. <br />This soil is suited to all of the crops comrrtonly grown in the survey <br />area. However, at this elevation, with so short a growing season, <br />the 20 acres is used only for hay and pasture grazing. It is not <br />likely to be used for intensive cultivated crops. <br />Sincerely, <br />L.D.
