A small number of prairie dog holes are present along the eastern edge of the
property, but were not occupied during our visit. We assume that the prairie dogs were either
poisoned or died of plague. A few large cottonwood trees are present along the Fulton Ditch at
the NW comer of the property -the application states that these will not be disturbed.
This plan proposes to intentionally create a considerable acreage of wetland on the south side
adjacent to a stream corridor. That appears to be a good location for the wetland, since it
complements the stream corridor and is also near some large trees. Although not stated in the
application, we were verbally told that the wetland to be created would be in partial mitigation of
wetland impacts at the Howe Pit to the west.
We note the statement on page 8 that "the proposed reclamation plan does not propose to
create wildlife habitat". The creation of several acres of mitigation wetland at the south end of
the project area would certainly appear to be the creation of wildlife habitat to us.
Please let me know'rf you have any questions.
Sincerely,/ ~
~GG~C W GG~
Dave Weber
Habitat Biologist
cc: Obe Lowry, DWM
iii iuiiiiiiiiuiii -
999
,-
n. ,c~
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Greg Watcher, Executive Director
WILDLIFE COMMISSION, Chuck Lewis, Chairman .Mark LeValley, Vice Chairman .Bernard L.
