POST FSTAIILISHMENT MANAGII~1II~tT <br />Many reclamation efforts are unsuccessful for lack of continuing management. <br />Reclamation plantings often require two or more years to maintain themselvee. <br />The following items should be included in a follow-up management plan: <br />1. Fencing - One she31 break in a fence will destroy its usefulness. <br />Grazing must be deferred for at least two years after establishment; <br />fence maintenance is a must. <br />2. Mulching - The planting must be examined periodically to determine <br />if the mulching medium is intact. Afulch ie sometimee needed for <br />two or three years after planting. <br />3. Weed control - Preparing a site for reclamation planting also pre- <br />pares the site for competing and perhaps undesirable weed species. <br />Weed competition may prolong the establishment period. <br />4. Supplemental water - If supplemental water is used, maintenance of <br />the systems must be included in management. <br />5. Planting evaluation - Although not generally part of a post-estab- <br />lishment managementlian, all plantings should be evaluated to gain <br />information that would be useful in subsequent reclamation projects. <br />6. Reseeding -Area there seeding has failed because of weed takeover, <br />drought, blowout, overgrazing or ~Y other reason will be reseeded. <br />The renovation area should be disked and weeds controlled, then re- <br />seeded with the original seed mi* and mulched. <br />7. Proper Cc~azing Use - If the area is to be grazed, a minimum of two <br />years or until the stand is well established is required. L~Jhen <br />grazing, at least half of the current years growth xill be left on <br />the area. <br />$. Soil testing - Monitoring of the soil fertility is needed to insure <br />that enough plant nutrients are available for stand maintenance or <br />improvement. <br />9. Fertilization - Application of fertilizer according to soil test <br />results will insure stand maintenance. <br />10. 1~laintenance of structural practices - Practices installed for erosion <br />control and protection of areas will be maintained to insure proper <br />operation and to extend the usefulness of the practice. <br />11. Correction and control of unforeseen problems - When new problems <br />develop the situation will be corrected or controlled as rapidly <br />as possible. <br />
