<br />203.03 <br />SECTION 203 <br />EXCAVATIONAND EMBANKMENT <br />DESCRIPTION <br />203.01 General. This work consists of excavation, hauling, disposal, placement, and <br />compaction of all material encountered within the limits of the work, including <br />constmction of dikes and the excavation for ditches and channels, necessary for the <br />construction of the roadway in accordance with the Contract. All excavation will be <br />classified, "unclassified excavation", "stripping", "muck excavation", "rock <br />excavation", "borrow", or "potholing" as hereafter described. All embankment will be <br />classified "embankment material" or "rock fill" as hereafter described. <br />203.02 Excavation. <br />(a) Unclassified Excavation. Unclassified excavation shall consist of the <br />excavation of all materials of whatever character required for [he work, obtained <br />within [he right of way, including surface boulders and excavation for ditches and <br />channels that is not removed under some other item. <br />Overhanging rock or other rock considered dangerous shall be removed when <br />ordered, and will be classified "Unclassified Excavation". <br />(b) Stripping. Stripping shall consist of removing overburden or other specified <br />material from material pits, and the replacement of overburden or other <br />specified material over the disturbed area of the site or pi[ after the underlying <br />material has been removed. <br />(c) Muck Excavation. Muck excavation shall consist of the removal and disposal of <br />mixtures of soils and organic matter not suitable for foundation or embankment <br />material. <br />(d) Rock Excavation. Rock excavation shall consist of igneous, metamorphic, and <br />sedimentary rock which cannot be excavated without blasting or the use of <br />rippers, including all boulders or other detached stones having a volume of/z <br />cubic yard or more, as determined by physical or visual measurement. <br />(e) Borrow. Borrow shall consist of approved material obtained from outside the <br />right of way, required for the construction of [he project. <br />(f) Potholing. Potholing consists of exposing and verifying the location of existing <br />utilities at locations as directed. <br />203.03 Embankment. <br />(a) Embankment Material. Embankment material shall consist of approved material <br />acquired from excavations, hauled and placed in embankments. Approval of the <br />embankment material will be contingent on the material having a resistance value <br />when tested by the Hveem Stabilometer, or equivalent resilient modulus value, of <br />• <br />139 <br /> <br /> <br />
