13
• The production means for the Ponderosa pine-oak reference area
~ ~ are presented in Table 11. Danthonia narryi had a mean production
value of 0.3 gins/~n2. Perennial forhs, perennial grasses, cool season
grasses, ~outeloua curtipendula, Carex spp., Swertia radiata, Thalictrum
dasycarpum and Thalictrum fendleri all had mean production values of
0.1 qms/int. The remaining species had mean production values of 0.03
gms/m2 and less. The total mean herbaceous production for the site
was 1.02 gms/m2.
Density measurements for the Ponderosa pine-oak reference are
presented in Table 12. In the shrub category, Quercus amq belii had a
mean density of 1.6/m2. Cercocarpus montanus had a mean density of
0.3/m2, Symphoricarpos oreophilus had a mean density of 0.1/m2, and
Rosa o-roodsii had a mean density of 0.03/m2. In the tree category,
• Pinus ponderosa had a mean density of 2.0/100in2, Pinus edulis had a
~ }
mean density of 1.3/100!n2, and Juniperus scopulorum had a mean density
of 0.7/100m2. Juniperus scopulorum was the only sapling encountered,
with a mean density of 0.3/100m2. Total mean density for the site/
100in2 was 4.3, compa~•ed to 2.23/in2.
Danthonia narryi was clearly a dominant species in the herba-
ceous component of the Ponderosa pine-oak reference area. Other
herbaceous dominant; tivere Carex sp., perennial (orbs, Thalictrum
fendleri, and Bouteloua curtipendula. Quercus nambelii o-,as the deni-
nanC shrub, Pinus ponderosa and !'inns eduiis Mer? denina~:i tree
species. Juniperus scopulorumr :gas the only sapling encountered, so
was a dominant in that category.
The tree and shrub dominants from [lie cover, production and
• ` density values clearly reflected the characteristics of a Ponderosa
