~.
h1ETHODS
Representative areas of each vegetation type occurring on the
t4axlvell ~4ine and Allen Kline permit areas ~•,ere selected for the vege-
tation inventory. These reference areas reflected the vegetation that
had been disturbed by the mining operations or would be disturbed in
the future. Each reference area was fenced, with an opening left for
animals to enter. There had been no livestock grazing in the area,
but deer grazing o-,as evident. Each reference area was of different
dimensions. Diagrams of each reference area are presented in Figures
1 and 2.
Sampling plots were randomly located in each reference area by
a random numbers table and 1PI x 1P1 grid system. Production r,as esti-
mated within a 0.5 x l.Ohl plot by clipping major species and species
categories. The plants were oven-dried and measurements o-,ere conver-
ted to oven-dry weight values. Cover 1•,as estimated v,ithin a 20 x 50 cm
plot placed in the upper left hand corner of the 0.5 x 1.Ot•1 plgt.
Cover was estimated by major species and species categories to 'the
I nearest 1°;. Density 1',as obtained by counting tfle number of individ-
I
ual trees, shrubs, and saplinns 1•,ithin one square laeter fol• shrubs or
`:1 [:111' 1C':; iCjUal'Q Iiie te!'G f01' t!'O_?S.
The means (r) and standard errors (S-) for cover (herbaceous
x
and non-herbaceous) and production ':,ere calculated and means (X) for
density per 100112 and lf•12 1•,ere calculated. Total Ir.eans for cover,
` production and density a,ere calculated for each reference area. Sample
adequacy v,as ::.et at all times.
5
