C

STUDY AREAS
The !laxwell Mine encompassed grassland and pinyon-juniper
vegetation types. The grassland type was found on a level plateau
approximately 7200 ft. in elevation. It was characterized mainly by
blue grams (Bouteloua gracilis), with western wheatgrass (Agropyron
smithii), fringed sagebrush (Artemisia frigida), and other grasses
and forbs interspersed. The grassland type exists on fairly shallow
soils, resulting in greater water runoff and less penetration. Pre-
cipitation is low and infrequent.
The pinyon-juniper type was located on a north to northwest-
facing slope of approximately 7200 ft. elevation with a slope of _ .
17-22°. It was characterized by an overstory of pinyon pine (Pious
I edulis) and Rocky Mountain juniper (Juniperus scopulorum). Fringed
' sagebrush (Artemisia frigida), milkvetch (Astragalus striatus), and
numerous other shrubs and forbs constituted the understory. The
i
i
I pinyon-juniper type occurred on shallow, stony soils with a warm and
relatively dry exposure. The soils were a light bro4vn sandy loan.
The Allen Mine permit area included the Ponderosa pine-Douglas
fir-oak, Ponderosa pine-oak, and willo4v Carr vegetation types. Tlie
Ponderosa pine-Douglas fir-cak vegetation type 4vas located on a
north-facing slope at 7600 ft. elevation and 4vith a slope of 30°. It
consisted of an overstory of mainly Ponderosa pine (Pious ponderosa)
and Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii).
