2.04.3(3)
Previous Underground Mining
As mentioned earlier, underground mining has been perfomred in the
vicinity of the permit area since 1934. Historical information
regarding this previous underground mining is found in Section
2.04.4, Cultural and Historic Resource Information. Information
regarding the previous operations is found in Exhibit 6, Previous
Underground Mining Operations. From a historical viewpoint, the
pre-mining land use, prior to any underground coal mining, was
undeveloped lands.
The location and extent of surface acreage disturbed by previous
underground operations in the area utilized by the Bear No. 3 Mine
operation is shown on the Vegetation Map (Map 3) and Soils Map (Map
4). The approximate past underground mining limits and names of
existing or abandoned mining operations are presented on the
Previously Mined Areas Map (Map 16).
Existing Land Use and Land Use Classification Under Local Law
The Gunnison County Commissioners in conjunction with the Gunnison
County Planning Commission have designated the lands within the
permit and adjacent areas for uses of "mining". However, if mine
plans or surface support facilities are substantially changed, the
Gunnison County Commissioners must approve the change. The
Operator's Gunnison County land use change permits are presented in
Section 2.03.10 and Exhibit 4.
• 2.04-5 Rev. 09-26-94
