1

SECTION V
' ALLUVIAL VALLEY FLOOR DETERMINATION AND PROTECTION
(2.06.8)
In order to assess the alluvial valley floor (AVF)
potential of the drainages associated with the Red Canyon
' Mines, field investigations were undertaken in the Spring of
1982. These investigations and other related studies
' followed recommended procedures outlined in the AVF
Identification and Study Guidelines of the Office of Surface
Mining (OSM). The field investigations consisted of
' geomorphologic and water availability evaluations and an
assessment of land use practices. Based on the potential
' impacts of the Red Canyon Mines and the concerns of the
' Colorado Mined Land Reclmation Division, the field efforts
focused on the valleys of Ward Creek and Williams Creek (see
' Map 1).
This section of the report discusses the results of the
' AVF field investigations and analyses, provides an AVF
determination (considering geomorphic, water availability,
1 and land use characteristics), evaluates the preservation of
' essential hydrologic functions, and identifies an AVF
monitoring program.

75
,~
