51
C~
•
Depth: In inches or centimeters fran the top of A1, or surface mi-
neral horizon, except for the surface of peat or muck in Bogs and
Half Bogs.
'If~ickrrss: Average thickness and range, as B(4-9) .
Boundary: [hrizon boundaries are described as to distinctness:
Abrupt-a; clear-c; gradual-g; diffuse-d; and according to top-
ography: Smooth-s; wavy-w; irregular-i; broken-b. An abrupt,
irregular boundary is ai.
Cnl.or: Soil colors are indicated by using the appropriate hiunsell
notation, such as 5YR 5/3. The spaces in the suggested notebook
page under color are left open, except for checking whether dry or
moist, in order to accamndate the small space to the need of the
descriptions of individual horizons. If the soil mass is one solid
color, only one notation is required. If the outsides of aggregates
differ significantly fran their interiors, both colors are needed.
The description of mottled soil horizons needs to include the color
of the matrix and the color, or colors, of the principal mottles
plus a description of the pattern of mottling.
Mottling: A description of the mottling in soil horizons requires
a notation of the colors and of the pattern. Colors can be given
in terms of the Mansell notation or in their linguistic equivalents,
since exact measuranent is neither possible nor necessary. The pat-
tern may be noted as follows:
Abundance; Contrast:
few............f faint...........f
camion.........c
many...........m
Size:
fine...........1
medium.........2
distinct........d
prcminent.......p
coarse.........3
Thus a medium ray soil horizon mottled with yellow and reddish
brawn crould be noted as: lOYR 5/1, cad, lOYR 7/6 and SYR 4/4 (or)
lOYR 5/1, cad, yellow and reddish brawn.
~J
