As range condition deteriorates,
wheatgrasses and needlegrasses decrease, fortis and woody shrubs
increase, and undesirable weeds and annual plants invade and become
more abundant.
This soil is used for winter range by mule deer and elk. Important plant
species which should be managed include bitterbrush, mountainmahogany,
Gambel oak, ser- viceberry, and elk sedge. Berry-producing shrubs are an
important habitat element of black bear. This soil provides habitat for
Merriam turkey, blue grouse, and bandtailed pigeon. In favorable years
mature Gambel oaks produce acorns, which are used by Merriam turkey.
Most of the above discussion of soils is taken from the Soil Survey of the
Paonia Area, U. S. Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service.
(1)(b) Soils analysis for representative samples of each soil horizon for each soil
• type with analyses conducted using standardized soil testing procedures.
The results of the laboratory analysis of the soils are presented in Exhibit 7.
The soils in the mine area to be disturbed by the surface operations and
facilities lack a significant A horizon. The C horizon of the soils are
characterized as rocky >50% and extremely variable with respect to depth.
Consequently, the A and B horizons of each map unit were combined for
laboratory analysis purposes. The C horizon was not considered suitable for
salvage.
The soils in the loadout area to be disturbed have a distinct Al horizon as
well as a B horizon. The B horizon grades into an unconsolidated C horizon
consisting of mostly loose granitic and some sandstone rock. The A and B
horizon will be salvaged as one unit.
The following presents a discussion of the soil map units in the area of the
vent shaft in Freeman Gulch. Reference Map 4a for the location of the
boundaries of the soil map units. The discussion of soils is taken almost
verbatim from the Soil Survey of Paonia Area, Colorado prepared by the Soil
• Conservation Service.
PR-06 2.04 -56 - 8/01
19~PRoVeD
~~ISId~
