2.04.7
Industrial use of water in the permit and adjacent area is restricted to the use
by the Terror Creek loadout. The loadout obtains its water from a well and
the Fire Mountain Canal. The mine's potential impact on both of these water
sources is discussed above.
The United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) considers any
consumptive use of water by the mine to deplete the flow in the Colorado
River. Water depletions in the Upper Colorado River Basin have been
recognized as a major source of impact to endangered fish species (USFWS
2/93). The Operator will agree to implement the conservation measures that
the USFWS believe are necessary to offset this impact.
Wildlife use of water in the permit and adjacent areas is for subsistence.
Wildlife use the perennial streams, springs and ponds. It is possible the
mine could impact some of the springs or ponds. If this impact occurs, the
Operator will mitigate this water loss by constructing or repairing pond(s) and
augmenting the flow with water from the mine or from the Deer Trail Ditch.
In the event that contamination, diminution, or interruption in the
underground or surface water supplies result from coal mining operations,
• the following protective measures would be followed.
1) Adequate protection of water rights will be monitored. The Operator has
designed and implemented a complete hydrologic monitoring program.
2) Adequate protection of water rights is ensured by regular monitoring and
quick repair of subsidence induced problems.
3) Possible alternative sources of water will be utilized, if required. The
Operator controls 3,750 shares of Class I and 960 shares of Class II stock
in the Deer Trail Ditch Company and 782 shares of Class II stock in the Fire
Mountain Canal.
MINE WATER INFLOW
It is anticipated that the Bowie #2 Mine will experience mine inflows from
faults, fractures (if present) and perched water bearing zones within the coal,
the overburden, and the floor rock. Due to the near identical geologic
structure, similar hydrologic regime and close proximity of the Bowie #2 Mine
and the Bowie #1 Mine, it would be prudent to predict that the inflow
characteristics of the majority of the area mined at the Bowie #2 Mine would
be similar to that experienced by the Bowie #1 Mine.
• During the 1995 - 1996 reporting period, the Bowie #1 Mine experienced a
mine inflow of less the 10 gpm. The flow came from 11 different point
PR-06 2.04 - 38 - 8/01
Ao~RovEQ
1 /I s/o~
