was run as if we all knew what the other had written to the DMG. Which is not true. Though we
have become acquainted because of our common goal, we DO NOT read each other's mail.
There seems to be, throughout this permit process, the attitude that everyone involved in these
mining operations are trustworthy, if you tell them what's expected of them they'll comply. Well,
you and I know that this is NOT the way a lot of people handle responsibility. All you have to do
is put a 5 year old in charge of the cookie jar and you'll get the normal human response.... the
cookies will disappear at an alarming rate. It is this FACT of human behavior that concerns all
who attended this meeting.
Additionally, when discussing the areas which the MLRB is responsible for, it was quite
shocking to discover that there is no testing of water prior to the permitting of a mining
operation. How can one be responsible for the quality of the groundwater and NOT have any
baseline data that concerns that groundwateR If this mining operation pollutes MY well (which
is only 60 feet deep and approximately 400 feet from the property line) who is responsible?
Your own department is charged with the quality, shouldn't they be the ones who gather
baseline data? Why should I have to pay for something that is fine now, but could be changed
by your board's decision to allow this operation? Especially when your own statutes state
"you're the one"?
Finally, it was reported by someone at the meeting that Mr. Gillis and Mr. Erickson were
seen having "brunch" with the applicant. If this is true, would that not be considered just a little
unethical? No one invited the protestors of the permit to lunch. This kind of behavior is what
we've been dealing with ever since the struggle began. It's hard to fight the "good of boys" who
are entrenched in this area. Makes me wish I'd never left the big city where there weren't so
many of'em...
Aggrieved and disappointed,
Pete and Cheri Robinson
PO Box 85, Dolores, CO 81323
