Drainage and Flood Control. Excavation resulting from the
removal of gravel will create temporary storage east of the
flood berm for flood flows entering the site. Contribution
of sediment and debris to South Boulder Creek during floods
will be minimized by protection of the gravel mining operation
and plant facilities. As with any flood event, some erosion
will occur, accompanied by debris deposition. In areas
where irrigation has been eliminated, erosion may increase
slightly due to the loss of ground cover. Under major .
flood conditions, the South Boulder Creek channel may widen
and meander but this would occur anyway and is not related to
the mining operation. The same situation exists with respect
to blockage of the U.S. 36 bridge and other structures by
• debris . The mining operation is not expected to increase the
debris contribution to the stream.
Water Quality. Water used for processing during the mining
operation will be settled in ponds on the site and recirculated.
Thus it will have no impact on South Boulder Creek. Deposited
sediments will be planted with the prescribed grass seed mix.
The decrease in irrigated pastures during the mining phase
will have a beneficial impact on the quality of flow in the
creek by reducing the discharge of irrigation return flows
• high in nitrates, phosphates , suspended solids and other
characteristics of fertilizer and animal waste. Human waste
will be discharged to a sanitary facility and will not impact
C-23
