" 194
'•nq „
~, r:'inn'2S
d (,.: o` y
Tim Ouellette, Area Range Conservationist, and I
accompanied you today to examine the site where you want to
excavate tY~e peat and gravel. The area is located in
Sections 16 and 17, T37N, R12E. The recommended
revegetation plan for this site is as follows:
Situation: Peat, a miscellaneous land type, is in an old
creek channel that has lost its main source of water.
According to the Alamosa County soil survey, the peat is 2
to 8 feet deep and is underlain by sand. In some places
there is a layer of lime 3 to 12 inches thick on the
surface. Vegetation is scarce; mostly Russian thistles.
Site_Preparation/Seeding: After mining operations are
completed the site should be ripped to leave about IZ inch
deep beds. The seed mixture should than be broadcast over
the site between November 1 and March 31. Species to be
used should include:
Variety Species
Immigrant prostrate kochia
Nezpar Indian ricegrass
Rincon Fourwing saltbush
(see attached seeding recommendations,
please note this mix is a per acre rec
Pure_liv_e seed/acre
- i ,-~---~ n/~g/9~
3.,~
1 a.,~.
CO-ECS-5, Part I;
ommendation.)
Weed control should be maintained on the site during plant
establishment. Mowing weeds throughout the growing season
would be the recommended option. Tim Ouellette also
recommended the area be mined and reclaimed in small parcels
so that the ground is not left open and subuect to erosion.
At the end of two years the success of the seeding should be
evaluated. If it is determined an inadequate plant stand is
present, the area should be seeded again.
If I can be of further assistance please let me know..
g-I -CI.~
Sincerely,
7 ~O (~ ~~. r"YlC' Ir _
~~ ~^j4X~ iuh~~E' t~nE? 1X'
N rma Van Nostrand ri~fY~OX~ CL~ ~' 110
District Conservationist ~ ~f
Alamosa Field Office
Attachments
