• ABSTRACT
Between September 6 and 22, 1979, Western Cultural Resource Management, Inc. per-
formed a cultural resource inventory on land intended for impact by the proposed
Seneca II-W Coal Mine of Peabody Coal Company (see Figure 5-2). Nine sites and five
isolated finds were located within the "life of the mine" boundary. Four of the sites are
historic, five are prehistoric, while all of the isolated finds are aboriginal and probably
prehistoric.
One of the prehistoric sites (5RT120) is recommended for avoidance and stabilization,
and one (5RT 132) is recommended for testing. All of the other culturol resources are
recommended to receive no further work.
Diagnostic material indicates the presence of Plains-Woodland and/or Fremont peoples,
late prehistoric to historic probably Ute peoples, and historic A nglos utilizing the area
with ranching and probably sheepherding.
This report is prepared under Colorado State Permit No. 79-47 and PSAP 78-CO-124.

- ix - Revised October 15. 1984
