Larencim Cocoon Mine - Wi(dIi(e Technical ReOOtt
• Although mourning doves were observed in the permit area, they were only observed from May
through September. During the breeding bird counts, doves were observed only in grassland and
mountain shrub areas of the permit area. However, doves were observed throughout the permit
area during other field surveys.
Raptors
The CDOW has indicated that 20 species of non-threatened or endangered raptors may potentially
occur within the general vicinity of the permit area (Appendix W-1). Of this total, 13 are diurnal
species and seven are nocturnal. Four of these species were observed during the study.
Overall, raptors occupy all major habitat types within the permit area. However, types occupied
by individual species varied. With all raptor species pooled, most observations were associated
with the oak/pinyon habitat type (50 percent of all roadside count observations).
Sixteen raptor nest sites and potential nest sites were located during 1996 (Map Pocket).
Subsequent nest surveys indicated none of these nests were active during 1996.
Overall, the most commonly observed raptor species was the red-tailed hawk. However, relative
abundances of this species was still low. Maximum red-tailed hawk abundance was 0.5 birds per
• mile during the roadside counts. Generally, observations indicate all species have relative
abundances of less than 0.1 birds per mile of road.
Two golden eagles were observed on Lorencito Creek during the February field work. The birds
were observed near awinter-kill mule deer doe. No other golden eagles were observed within the
permit area. However, the CDOW has identified a golden eagle nest site near the confluence of
Chimney and I.orencito Canyons (CDOW, 1996h) (Map 2.04.11-1). The nest was not relocated
during the field surveys and, therefore, it is not known if the nest was active during the 1996
breeding season. But eagles were not observed in the nest area during any of the field surveys.
Other Birds
The CDOW has indicated that 119 other bird species may occur within the permit area based on
potential habitat (CDOW, 1996h). Of this total, 39 were observed during 1996 breeding bird
counts. Transects conducted during May were used to evaluate the use of the coniferous forest,
mixed coniferous forest, grassland, oak pinyon and mountain shrub habitat types occumng within
the permit area during the breeding season.
Species diversity varied widely among the five habitat types (Table W-6). With 39 species
observed during the surveys, the coniferous forest type had the highest diversity with 20 species
observed.

Wildlife.476/December 9, 1996 17
