lnrencilo Canyon Mine -Wildlife Technical ReDOn
• No special habitat features, such as calving areas, were identified during the 1996 surveys.
Specific calving areas may not occur due to the relatively dispersed occurrence of the animals.
However, elk that occupy the area year-round are likely to calve in the permit area because of the
large area of undisturbed habitat and comparative lack of human activity in and near the area.
•
•
Estimates of elk population size (density or relative abundances) within the permit area are highly
variable. Small sample sizes are probably the primary reason for this variability. Relative
abundances vary from 0 to 2.4 elk/mile of road (Table W-4). Observations from the aerial survey
(Table W-2) could be considered minimum population size; however, common sense, terrain and
cover characteristics suggest there are more animals present than were counted.
TABLE W-4
LORENCITO CANYON MINE
ROADSIDE COUNT SURVEY RESULTS
Species Month
February
#/Habitat Type March
#/Habitat Type May
#/Habitat Type September
#/Habitat Type
Lorencito Can ou (5.9 miles)
Mule deer 1/oak/ in on
Acci iter ss I/oak/ in on
American kestral I/ rassland
Raven 2/ rassland
Red-tailed hawk 1 /oaW in on
Crow 8/oak/ in on
Rocks uirrel 2/ rassland
Puertecito - Alamosa Can on (7.6 miles)
Turke vulture l/coniferous (ores[
Rocks uirrel l/coniferous fores[
Merriam's turke 1! rassland
Mule deer ]Jconiferous forest
Crow 4/ rassland
Cottontail I/coniferous forest
Great horned-owl l/oak/ in on
Bonita-Co ote Can on (11.5 miles)
Crow 1/ rassland
Red-[ailed hawk I/mountain shrub
Mule deer 3/mountain shrub I/oak pinyon
2/mountain shrub
Unidentified ra for l/mountain shrub
Raven I/oak/ in on
Cow Can on (6.2 miles)
Elk 7/oak/ in on 2/oak/ in on 6/oak/ in on
Mule deer 8/oak/ in on l/oak/ in on
Cottontail I/mountain shrub
Red-tailed hawk l/oak/ in on
W ildl ifc.d75/December 9. 1996 11
