DEFINITION OF TERMS
• For the reader's understanding, it is necessary ro present the meanings of the following terms.
To facilitate an understanding of the areas associated with each geographic expression, Mnp 1
has heen prepared.
Apache Rocks Mining Area.* This area is designated by anorthwest-southeast trending cross-
hatched pattem. The Apache Rocks mining azea encompasses all of the longwall mining panels
in Sections 26, 27, 28, 29 and 30, T13S, R90W, 6th P.M.
Apache Rocks Mining Area Eastern and Western Panels.* The Apache Rocks westem
panels refer to the three western panels in the Apache Rocks mining area which aze located in
Sections 28, 29 and 30, T13S, R90W, 6th P.M. (dark shaded pattern). Both B- and E-Seam
longwall mining will occur in this azed. The Apache Rocks eastern panels refer to the four
eastern panels in the Apache Rocks mining area which are located mostly in Sections 26 and 27,
Tl3S, R90W, 6th P.M. (light shaded pattem). Only B-Seam mining will occur in this azea.
Apache Rocks Permit Revision Area.* This is the area that is designated by a dotted pattem in
Map 1. The Apache Rocks permit revision azea addresses those lands shown on the attached
figure which were permitted in the Apache Rocks permit revision.
Box Canyon Mining Area.* This area is designated by anortheast-southwest trending cross-
hatch pattern in Map 1. The Box Canyon mining azea encompasses the six panels located mostly
in Sections 14, 1~, 22 and 23, T13S, R90W, 6th P.M. Only B-Seam mining will occur in these
• panels.
Box Canyon Permit Revision Area.* This area is designated by a "box" pattern in Map I. The
Box Canyon permit revision area encompasses the remainder of the Box Canyon lease tract that
was not permitted in the Apache Rocks permit revision.
Critical Mining Width. The width of a mining panel necessary for maximum subsidence to
occur; the length of the panel must also be greater than, or equal to, critical panel width for
maximum subsidence to occur. Critical width (W«) commonly ranges from 1.0 to l.4 times the
mining depth (d).
Subcritical Mining Width. The width of a mining panel less than critical width (i.e., less than
1.0 to 1.4d).
Supercritical Mining Width. The width of a mining panel greater than critical width.
Super Panel. Two or more mining panels that essentially behave like a large, single panel (i.e.,
the subsidence profile above this panel looks like a single panel, although the profile may show
some irregularities).
* The focus of Exhibit 60 is on the Apache Rocks and the Box Canyon Mining ,9reas. It is not
feasible to quantify subsidence by reference strictly to the permit revision areas; to the
contrary, it is necessary to evaluate the relevant panels in their entirety.
. c'1831-032\180kab\exhibi~.602
v
