• Surface Water Morirbring Programs During and After Acfive Mining Operations
Surtace water monitoring during and after mining at the NH1 and NH2 mining areas will be
essentially the same as the existing monitoring programs. As changes and revisions of the existing
monitoring program become necessary, Wr=C will contact the CDMG and discuss any changes in
the monitoring program. Then a minor permit revision to the existing permit will be written and
submitted to the CDMG.
Surface Water Quality Sample Harxfling, Preservation, and Arelysis
Surface water quality samples are collected by grab sampling or using a depth integrated sampler.
Table 15-2 indicates the sample type, preservative, and bottle type nececessary for analysis of the
particular constituents shown. Raw and/or raw acidified water samples are taken from the sampling
site and placed into specially prepared sample bottles. The water samples are chilled by packing in
ice and shipped to WFC's present contract laboratory (ACZ Laboratories, Steamboat Springs,
Colorado). Laboratory procedures are consistent with those outlined in the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency's Manual Methods for chemical Analysis of Water and Waste (1983).
• All surface water samples are field tested for PH, temperature, and conductivity at the time they are
collected. The PH meter used to measure field~etermined PH values at the NH1 and NH2 mining
area is calibrated by performing iwo point calibrations prior to each daily round of monitoring
activities and one point calibration prior to each measurement using buffer solution of know PH
values obtained from outside laboratories. Three buffer solutions are used for calibration: 1) PH 10,
2) PH 7, and 3) PH 4. The buffer solutions are replaced monthly to ensure accurate calibration of
the meter.
•
(Revised 12-31-96~ 1 ~}
