• wel I. Well completion summaries and lithologic logs for the monitor wells are contained in Appendix
15-2.
WFC's Minor Revision No. 15 and 21, along with Technical Revision No. 24 modified the ground
water monitoring program. In the NH1 mining area, G1/1FN1P1, GV~FN4R were dropped from the
monitoring list because they were close to GW-N1 and GW-N4 and duplicate information that was
being gathered. G1Ii~N5,GII~FN6,andG1/~N23weredroppedfromthelistbecausetheyweremined
out. In NH2 mining area, GW-N16P1, GV~FN17P1, G4~N18P1 were dropped from the list because _
they were dose to G1/m~N16, GI/mEN17, and G1/~FN18. GV~N31, G1/~N32, G1/~N33 were
discontinued because they were either south of Calamity Draw or way west of NH2 mining area.
G1/mFN30 and G1/tFN34 has been mined through. GII~N22 well can not be found so it was dropped
from the list as well. Presently, there are 12 monitoring wells at NH1 and 14 at NH2 being
monitored. Appendix 15-1 list the current wells that are being monitored at NH1 and NH2.
Well Completion and Developrrent
There areten monitorwells (GV1r! N1, GI/m~N1 P1, GV~N3, GW-N4, G1/~N5, GI/1r-N6, G1/~N8, G1/mEN9,
• GW-N10, and GW-N11) within and adjacent to the Nucla Mine that were installed in 1977 and 1979.
The completion information on the ten original Nuda wells lacks specific completion details. Monitor
Well GV~N5 was mined out in 1987. In the summer of 1986, nine new monitor wells (GW-N13
through G1ImFN21) were completed in the NH2 Mining area to help define the baseline conditions of
that area. Also, three multiple completion (overburden, coal, and underburden) monitor wells (GW-
N23, GV1FN24, and GV1FN25) were installed at what is called the scraper pit area of the Nucla Mine.
All three of the scraper pit area monitor wells have been dry since they wire installed. In August
and September 1987, four additional monitor wells were completed at the Nuda Mine; three in the
spoil material (GI/i~N26, GW-N27 and GV~N28) and one in the Dakota coal (GW-N4R). In addition
to the four monitor wells installed at Nuda Mine, six exploration bore holes (GV~N29 through GW-
N34) were completed as monitor wells in the vidnity of the NH2 area. In 1994, GW-N36 through
GW-N40 were drilled in NH2 area.
For quality control, each monitor well is developed and evaluated before it is incorporated into the
long term monitoring program. The first stage of development entails air lifting imrrmediately after the
well is drilled and completed. Drill pipe is lowered inside the casing of a four-inch well (1 1/4-inch
steel pipe in a 2-inch well) and then air is injected into the well fordng water, sediment, and
• (Revised 1231-96) 15-$
