• Homoiothermy is facilitated by the insulating affect of canopy cover. Canopy
covet is effective in moderating daytime and nighttime temperatures. Ir, this
way, big game are able to reduce outside temperature effects upon body
functions by moving in or out of thermal cover depending on the time of day or
season. Foc elk on summer range, thermal cover is defined as any stand of
vegetation :with a height of 40 feet or more. Thermal cover for deer, on the
other }sand, is summer and sprinb-fall range where vegetative cover is at Least
5 feet Ca11 with 757.. or more crown closure. For deer, Thomas et al ., (1979)
recomvends that optimum habitat contain the following, percentage of forage and
covers for summer and spring-fall range:
1. Forage areas - 60X
2. Hiding covo_r - 20X
3. Thermal cover - lOX
4. Fawning cover - 5X
5. Hiding, thermal, or fawning cover - SY.
• Fawning cev_r are those areas with at least 50 percent crown cover and shrubs
from 2 to 6 feet tall. Fawning cover need not be considered a separate
requirement since it will occur naturally as a resulC of shrub reestablishment.
However, a good water supply should be within 600 feet.
3.0 Wildlife use at the Trapper Mine
The Trapper Mine permit area is located on the north facing slopes of the
Williams Fork Mountains and encompasses an area of nearly twelve square miles.
The identified vegetation types are sage-grass at the lower elevations and the
west end and mountain shrub at the higher elevations and the east end. The
mountain shrub type has been further broken down to range sites A and B. Range
site A includes areas above 7,200' plus east and north aspects while range site
B includes areas below 7,200' and south and west aspects. The sage-grass range
site is designated range site G.
•
-11-
