Raton Creek,-in turn, flows into the Fur•gatoire
• Fiver appro:;imately two miles northwest of the permit area.
An e.:amination of the unnamed tributary stream bed, within the
permit area, revealed that natural slope wash material and
material derived from old mine dumps had previously clogged the
natural stream bed. (Map 16). The stream has subsequently eroded
the material resulting in steep walled gullies six to seven feet
deep. The current stream bed, depending on e>:act location, is
either bedrock. floored or covered by an alluvial veneer. The
absenr_e or presence of the veneer reflects minor changes in the
stream gradient. The stream is operating in a degradation al mode
in which unconsolidated deposits are heing transported downstream.
Additionally, although stream sinuosity was noted, meanders and
. terraces associated with alluvial valley floors were not present.
593
