4
VEGETATION
Types
This site has been used for agriculture. The western portion of
the site, about 100 acres , is used for crop land, historically
for pasture grass ; the eastern portion is pasture land.
Vegetation is primarily native wet grassland with some intro-
duced weedy species. There are areas of wet sedge meadows.
All vegetation in the areas to be mined will be removed. The
riparian woodland along Boulder Creek will remain largely
undisturbed.
Relationship to Soils and Average Production
Soil types found at the site are all suitable to range land:
Aquolls are salt meadow range soils , Aquepts are wet meadow
range soils, Bankard sandy loams are sandy bottomland range
soils and Nunn loams are loamy plains range soils. Typically,
grasses include switchgrass and Western wheatgrass, saltgrass ,
sedge, rush, blue grama and needle and thread, as well as
other native and introduced species. Production varies with
soil type from 1000 to 1600 pounds per acre for Nunn loam to
3000 to 4000 pounds per acre on flooded Aquolls and Aquepts.
Best soil management is based on leaving half of the pro-
duction.
J-1
