Box 774018
Steamboat Springs, CO 80477
Attn: Mr. Jerry Nettleton
Job Number: O I X944
Subject: GeotechnicaVPavement Design
Investigation, Fish Creek Ventilation Access
Road and Shaft Pad, RAG -Twentymile Coal
Company, Routt County, Colorado.
Gentlemen:
As requested, NWCC, Inc. (Northwest Colorado Consultants, Inc.) has prepared this report outlining the
geotechnical conditions encountered at the site and provide pavement section recommendations for the
proposed access road to be constructed by the RAG -Twentymile Coal Company for the Fish Creek
Ventilation Pad, which is located on the Foidel Creek Mine Property in Routt County, Colorado. It should
be noted that this report has been completed in accordance with our proposal dated July 4, 2001.
Prouosed Construction: It is our understanding that the proposed access road will be agravel-surfaced
roadway just under 1 mile in length. The road will be constructed from the existing access road to the nosh
- northwest to the new Fish Creek Ventilation Shaft. It is our understanding that the roadway will
primarily be subjected to pickup truck traffic, however occasional delivery haul trucks will also use the
roadway to deliver equipment and supplies to the shaft site.
Site Conditions: The topography at the project site is variable and generally consists of rolling hills. The
site is vegetated with sagebrush, weeds and grasses. Fish Creek crosses the proposed roadway alignment
approximately 1,700 to 1,900 feet southeast of the proposed ventilation shaft.
Subsurface Conditions: To investigate the subsurface conditions at the site, six (6) test pits were
advanced along the proposed access road at the approximate locations determined by Mike Berdine of
RAG -Twentymile Coal Company. The approximate locations of [he test pits are shown in Figure k I.
The subsurface conditions encountered in the test pits were somewhat variable and generally consisted of a
relatively thin layer of natural topsoil materials overlying natural clays, which in turn were underlain by
sands and gravels or claystone bedrock. Graphic logs of the test pits, along with the associated Legend and
Notes are shown in Figure #2.
•
(970) 879-7888 • Fax (970) 879.7891 • nwcc@cmn.nel
2580 Copper Ridge Drive, P.O.
