a
Geotechnical I Environmental Engineering • Materials Testing
December 10, 1996
Twentymile Coal Company
29515 RCR #27
Oak Creek, CO 80467
Attn: Mr. Rick Mills
Subject: Pavement Evaluation &
Recommendations, Rock Dust Bin Access
Road, Foidel Creek Miae, Routt County,
Colorado.
Gentlemen:
This report presents the results of a pavement evaluation and recommendations for the Rock Dus[ Bin
Access Road located on the Foidel Creek Mine property in Routt County, Colorado.
A field exploration program was conducted to obtain information on the subgrade conditions at the
• site. Material samples obtained during the subsurface investigation were tested in the laboratory to
provide data on the classification and engineering characteristics of the subgrade soils. The results of
the feld and laboratory investigations are presented herein.
This report has been prepared to summarize the data obtained and to present our conclusions and
recommendations, based on the existing conditions encountered and the assumed traffic loadings. A
discussion of geotechnical engineering considerations related to resurfacing of the access road are also
included.
We understand that the subject road is approximately 400 to 500 feet in length. The access road is
subjected to pickup truck traffic and occasional delivery and construction truck traffic.
Subsurface Conditions: The field investigation far this project was conducted on November 25, 1996.
Two (2) test holes were advanced at the site to explore [he subgrade conditions and to obtain samples
for laboratory testing. The test holes were excavated with a rubber tine backhoe. The test holes were
advanced [o depths ranging from 2 to 3 fee[. The test holes were logged by a representative of
Northwest Colorado Consultants, Inc. Graphic logs of the test holes are not drawn; however, a
discussion of the subgrade soil types encountered in the test holes are presented later in this report.
Samples obtained from [he test holes were examined and classified in the laboratory by the project
engineer. Laboratory testing included standard property tests, such as natural moisture contents, dry
• unit weights, grain size analyses and liquid and plastic limits. The laboratory testing was conducted in
general accordance with applicable ASTM and AASHTO specifications.
(970) 879.7888 • Fax (970) 879-7891
29585 U.S. 40 West, Boz 775226 • Steamboat Springs, CO 80477 ~~01~
