Reclamation Recommendations:
The owner wishes to retain the site for wheat production following mining operations.
In order to accomplish this, the topsoil (top 12") must be removed and
stockpiled, and should not be mixed with the subsoil. The subsoil should
also be stockpiled separately to be used in reshaping the site after mining.
Both stockpiles should be seeded with a desirable grass species.
Luna Pubescent wheatgrass, Arrlba Western Wheatgrass or Created Wheatgrasa
would be good choices. See the following seedling rate recommendations.
Broadcast seeding followed by a light drag or harrow would probably be the
best method. The grass will help prevent soil blowing and help slow any
noxious weeds which are prevalent in the area from invading the stockpile,
and later the reclaimed cropland. Any noxious weeds which invade the
stockpile or mined area should be controlled immediately.
Following mining, the area should be shaped and graded, first with the subsoil
to a slope not exceeding 6:1 if at all possible. The topsoil should then
__ be applied ae close ae possible to the original 12" thickness.
The site should then be ripped across elope a depth of 1'~ - 2 feet to bind
the topsoil and subsoil together and prevent slippage.
The site can then farmed ae it was previously.
