As a
result of our visit to these sites we. have the following recommendations.
The soils at the two northern sites consist of Pinata soils and rock
outcrops. The Pinata soil is a shallow, well drained, ston}• sandy loam.
The southernmost site is located in an area identified as a Ballet-Carnero
stony sandy loam. This soil 'is similar to t}te Pinata soil. (See the
Latimer County Area Soil Survey for more soil information.)
Vegetation on the quarry sites is very sparse and consist of annuals,
sage and a few hardy grasses. 'Lhe areas surrounding the quarries are
quite natural in appearance and vegetation. Big and little bluestem,
side-oats grama, blue grama, Griffiths whcatgrass and other natives exist
under shrub and tree cover of Mouutai.:~ Mahogany and ponderosa Pine.
Reclamation of these areas will be difficult because of the lack of
topsoil or any substantial amounts of fertile unconsolidated material.
To aid in reclamation, and future areas t}~at are scraped to expose bed-
rock should have all unconsolidated gathered and stockpiled. This mate-
rial should be protected from erosion (seeded) and spread over the area
after mining is complete. If revegetatien is desired after mining is
completed, the area should be graded and shaped to resemble the surround-
ing terrain. No slopes to be seeded should be steeper than 3:1. Steeper
areas should be terraced. The folluwing seeding mix could be used to
revegetate the area.
'i;. of Mix lbs.
