• Trinidad sandstone wells to the west and north should not be
affected even if a significant breach of the Vermejo/Trinidad
contact occurs.
No mitigation efforts appear necessary to avoid the localized
impacts to the saturated formations. The duration of any effects
will be long-term or until any areas of seepage or transmittance
become sealed.
AS S~a~ecK by Fisher, Harden and Fisher,
the Raton and Vermejo formations in the Starkville area are not
continuous with regionally extensive aquifers. Due to erosion,
low local precipitation and a recharge area that is on the distant
• western side of the basin, neither of these formations supplies
usable quantities of water to the nearby population. By true
definition they are not aquifers.
No additional wells can be affected by the n~W ntinin~ area,
except for the Bob Sanders well in T345, R64W, Section 2, which
is currently not operating. ih~; well was purchased
by Sundance Coal Company. Wells to the north in the Trinidad
Sandstone, namely the Yarberry and Daniels wells, should remain
unaffected.
Because of the small amounts of water available in the Raton and
Vermejo formations, any mine inflow could cause localized draw-
down in the water bearing strata, however, if this were to occur,
it would affect little else because the water is not being used.
. For the above reasons, no mitigation measures are deemed
necessary for impacts to the total water-bearing formations.
572
