Slope Stability Issues for Lorencito Coal Undereround Development VI'aste Pile
Plane and cylindrical failure aze the two most common forms of slope failure.
A plane failure nonually occurs as shown below when a slope consists of layers which may form
weak planes parallel to the slope. This type of failure is not applicable to a rock pile built in
small lifts and compacted at an angle to the slope.
,~
•~
•~
•~
~~ Weak Plane
i~
i~
i~
i~
i
.r
Example of Plane Failure
Cylindrical failure occurs when the cohesive and angular frictional forces of the material are not
strong enough to withstand the gravity component. The most common failure of this type is
circular or cylindrical in nature as shown on the following sketch. This type of failure is possible
in many types of materials, especially those that have steep slopes and poor strength
chazacteristics, which are compounded by wet conditions.
•
