Potential vegetation on this site consists of approximately thirty
percent cover dominated by blue grama, Indian ricegrass, western wheatgrass, needle and
thread, winterfat, and fourwing saltbush. Existing vegetation is not indicative of the s
potential. Successive years of over grazing have caused ecological deterioration and the:
invasion of less desirable species such as rabbitbrush, russianthistle, and pricklypear.
At present, the vegetation on the site consists of approximately twenty-five (25) percent
cover, generally less than three (3) feet in height, made up of the following grasses, fo.
and shrubs:
Grasses
Blue grama
Sand dropseed
Western wheatgrass
Needle and thread
Indian ricegrass
Bottlebrush squirrelta.il
Fendlers threeawn
Tunble grass
Shrubs
Tall rabbitbrush
Threadleaf green rabbitbrush
Forbs
Blueburr Stickseed
Plains pricklypear
Pinnate tansymustard
Bractless stickleaf mentzelia
Tuffed evening primrose
Scarlet globemallow
Pony beebalm
Buckwheat
Phlox
Russianthistle
Vegetation on the site is generally uniform with no significant variations due to
soils or topography. The major limiting factor for plant growth on the site is water.
Total annual hay production ranges from 300 to 800 pounds per acre air dry with an av-
erage of approximately 600 pounds per acre air dry. Existing carrying capacity is ap-
proximately one (1) cow/calf unit for every forty-eight (AB) acres grazed annually.

* Vegetation information compiled in consultation with the Soil Conservation Service,
Center Soil Conservation District.
C.
h;~
