t4EETIt1G NOTES
FIRE MOUNTAIN CANAL AND COLORADO WESTMORELAND
• November 8, 1984
CWI Representatives: Matt Sakurada and Jim Roberts
Fire Fountain Canal Representatives: Ben Sheldon, Charles Hallenbeck, Shirley
Smith, and Chuck Farmer
The meeting was held to further explain CWI's impact upon Fire Mountain Canal's
water rights. Matt explained that the two major streams (Terror Creek and West
Roatcap) would not be undermined and that only a small fraction of their drain-
age basins would be undermined. Also, in order to prevent subsidence from im-
pacting Steven's Gulch or East Roatcap Creek, solid portions of coal would be
left as buffer zones in areas of 500 ft. of overburden or less, with limited
acce~s entryways driven through these with no pillar recovery.
In areas of 500 ft. or more overburden, CWI's consultants and governmental
officials expect no effects to water resources. This is due to rubblizing and
lack of resulting surface tensile stresses. Fire Mountain Canal plans to aban-
don the Steven's Gulch decree and is satisfied with the water protection mea-
sures outlined by CWI. No concerns or questions were voiced.
A discussion concerniny Fire Mountain Canal shares as potential water replace-
ment sources followed. Matt informed the group that Fire fountain Canal water
• is coinniitted to CWI's orchard and would not be used as a replacement source.
Charles asked what is needed from Fire Mountain Canal, since they have no prob-
lems with CWI's water replacement plan. Matt replied that the meetings are
documented and nothing else is necessary.
JVR/jw
•
