The property known as the Black
Cat Pit was acquired in February 1978 by John Frank Triantos, Jr.
and Craig Allen Triantos. The affected land will include
9.9 acres. The Service describes
the vegetation as a "fair covering of native grass, sage, cactus
and brush."
Mining Plan. The pit area is a deposit of sand, pebbles,
cobbles, and boulders. The pit is overlain by spotty deposits
of sandy soil varying in thickness from three inches to ten feet.
The maximum depth of the operation will be 60 feet; therefore,
-3-
