The present monitoring network is a modification of the network used during
baseline monitoring. The modifications are mostly simplifications justified
by the monitoring records from 1978 to 1983. Continuous streamflow records
are made for Trout Creek above the mine (TR-a), and for the Koll Ditch and
Homestead Ditch from May through October (periods of freezing sometimes
necessitate the records to be of shorter duration). Instantaneous streamflow
is recorded on Trout Creek below the west Ridge mining area at TR-b.
Instantaneous streamflow is recorded on Oak Creek near the Edna Mine tipple at
Station OK-a. Surface water samples are collected above and below the mine at
TA-A and TR-D, respectively. Additional surface water sampling sites along
Trout Creek are taken at TR-B (downstream of the active mining area and
upstream of the Moffat Area) and TR-C (located adjacent to the Moffat Area).
Sites TR-B and TR-C are also located in the proximity of alluvial well TR-2
• and the Homestead Ditch intake, respectively. Sampling at TR-C was started in
April of 1985 in anticipation of mining the Moffat Area. Surface water
samples on Oak Creek are taken above and below the tipple at stations OK-A and
OK-B, respectively. Ground water samples are collected from five wells
completed in the alluvium along Trout Creek (TA-1, TR-1.5, TR-2, TR-3, and
TR-4), in the alluvium along Oak Creek (OK-2) and from a spoils well located
at the base of the West Ridge Area (WA-1).
Water Quality Analysis and Sampling Frequency
The samples are analyzed for the parameters listed in the permit on pages
4.6-141 through 4.6-191a. Sampling frequency at the various sites is also
listed on the abovementioned pages in the permit. Field parameters including
pH, temperature, conductivity and dissolved oxygen are measured using a Horiba
water quality test instrument.
