This proposed mining project will undoubtedly displace current deer
and small mammal inhabitants, however, l believe there is m other significam potential to negatively
impact wildlife or wildlife habitat. I recommcrai that any large trees presently standing and
accompanying downfall on the site be albwed to remain as they provide wildlife habitat including
perches fur roosting raptors and cover for deer, rabbits, fox, coyote, skunk9, raccoon, and reptiles. i
recommend the applicant replace woody vegetation (trees & shnl6s) that ere bst as a resuh ofthe mining
operation on a orle for one basis. For example, if you cut down 20 trees during the construction
operation, I suggest that you replarrt 20 trees at the Cvne of reclerzlation
Ttte entire proposed mining site is bceted wRhin the overall range of both mule deer and white-tailed
deer. 1 suggest that the site be reasonably reclaimed folbwing mining and revegetated with appropriate
plant species (grass, forbs, shrubs, trees) which will encourage further usage by deer. The Division of
Wildlife and the Natural Resource Conservation Service are available for wmment/edvice on which
vegetative species might be used during rcvegetation.
1 recommend that the final lake be constructed such as to maximize shoreline by using an irregular
shape which includes jetty-type structwes protruding into the pond where possible as welt as one or
more islands. In addition to a grading of 3h:1 v on the pond walls, we suggest also constructing
shallower areas (Sh:l v up to lOh:ly) which wilt encourage growth of aquatic vegetation and also
invertebrate prey for waterfowl Consider adding tulderwater topography/structwe (e,g. dead
logs/trees, ccmtrt rip-rep) to the ponds which will eacowage growth of aquatic vegetation and
increase the presence of invertebrates. '
As always, it is suggested that care betaken dwing mining to avoid excess erosion, siltetbn, or
disturbance of more land.than rtecessary to accomplish the project.
