UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICUL~RE
SOIL CONSERVATION SERVICE
• 356 Ranneq Street, Craig, Colorado 81625
Mr. Jim Osborne
Representing 81ue Jet Mining Inc.
Craig, Colorado 81625
Dear Mr. Osborne:

March 20, 1978
The following recommendations on reclamation of the Blue Jet Mining Area
•re made at your request. To assist qou Ln successful tevegetation of the
mined Brea the following guidelines should be helpful.
1. During mining operations 10 to 12 inches of top soil should be stock piled
for later use in revegetative measures.
2. After mining the Brea should be shaped and graded with eubeoil material.
Slopes should not be steeper than 3:1. Slopes of 6:1 of flatter are more
deefreable. In general, the chances for vegetation establishment increase
• ae percent slope decreases. After shaping and grading have been completed
apply the available topsoil 1/ to [he area. The Bite should be tilled [o a depth
of approximately 6 inches. Tillage will permit the topsoil to bind with the
eubeoil material, prevent airpockete, encourage root penetration and prevent
topsoil slippage on elopes. If the topsoil is placed on the area during the
summer and seeding x111 not be done until fall the Bite should be kept free
from weed a.
3. Fertilize immediately prior to seeding with 40-60 pounds available N and
40 to 60 pounds available P205 per acre. 200 pounds of either Aewnium Nitrate
or Amonium Sulfate per acre along with 100 pounds of Super Phosphate per acre
will provide the desired amount of N and P205. Apply the fertilizer during
seedbed preparation before packing it. The fertilizer should be incorporated
into Lhe soil to a depth of 2 to 4 inches.
4. A weed-free, firm but not compacted seedbed should be prepared before
seeding. A cultipacker or similar equipment can be used to firm up the
seedbed. The soil should be firm enough that when a man walks on 1t the heel
of hie shoe will only oink into the soil an inch or so.
5. Drill the following grass-legumr. mixture 1/2 to i inch deep in the
prepared seedbed. Planting should be made with a drill capable of seeding
both large and smell seeds in sel~arete compartments. Care should be taken to
see that the seed !e planted at the proper depth. Drill aeroee the elope.
• o
