SA.^ITA FE LOADOUTS
2.05.6 t3) Protection of the Hydrologic Balance
f:ontaminat:ion of Surface Waters Downstream
------------------------------------------
The mine will have. no discharge for all storms less than the 10
year - ~4 hour event. due to the e:;cavated sumps on each lease.
Herms aro;_;nd the lease area provide a safety factor in this
design, sa that the storm that would produce discharge from the
site wo;_ild be actually greater than the 1~; year - ~4 hour event.
For any storm great enough to produce a discharge from the site,
the effects would be minimal because of the small size of the
operation.
Possible Contamination of Ground Water due to Leaching of To>ric
---------------------------------------------------------------
• Materials
Information on borings near the lease area show that the surface
is comprised of a silty, clay material underlain by weathered
shale and hard shale, which is not conducive to water
percolation. Visual observation of the lease areas shows that
the surface material has been highly compacted from heavy
equipment and railroad use, and that rain water usually builds up
in shallow ponds and evaporates.
The impact is also minimized by the fact that the combined lease
area is only 3.32 acres and that it has traditionally been used
as a rail. car loading site.
•
621
