availability of phosphorous to plants. Additionally, it will be difficult
• to properly incorporate applied phosphorus into the soil over much
of the reclaimed sites. Seed mixes are comprised of mostly native
species. These native species and the few introduced species are
adapted to low fertility environments.
If at any time fertilization of a site is deemed necessary, the type
and rate of application will be based on fertility tests. Tests will
use an ammonium bicarbonate - DTPA extract method for pH,
electrical conductivity, nitrate-nitrogen, phosphorus, iron,
potassium, manganese, zinc and copper and a water extract for
sodium, calcium and magnesium.
(viii) The North Decline was graded in the spring of 1992 and seeded
with the final seed mix in the fall of 1992. Visual inspections of
the site during 1993 through 1995 indicated poor revegetation
success for grasses and fortis and a major invasion of cheat
grass. The shrubs did well on portions of the site. There is no
hurry for bond release on the site and the current vegetative cover
is adequate for erosion control, therefore, control of cheatgrass is
not an immediate concern. Control of cheatgrass and reseeding
will be done according to plans approved by the Division at some
later date. Approximately 2.5 acres was ripped on 2' intervals to
a depth of 18" in the fall of 1996 and broadcast seeded on the
rough ripped surtace. This treatment will be evaluated as a
possible treatment for the entire site.
Regrading and Stabilization of Rills and Gullies
Reclaimed areas will be monitored for rills and gullies in the spring
14-27 (Rev. 12/16/96)
