~ ~i
v4
Letter to Mark Glab Page 2
Area citizens will have an opportunity to provide input on the
draft permit at a prehearinq conference scheduled for Monday, March
16, 1998 at 1:00 p.m. at the Canon City City Council Meeting Room
located at 612 Royal Gorge Boulevard. I strongly encourage you to
attend if at all possible, and make certain that your concerns are
addressed. I have enclosed a copy of the announcement for this
conference for your reference. You .will note that it includes the
DMG's recommendations on the permit, and the issues that are and
are not within the jurisdiction of the Mined Land Reclamation Board
(NLRB) to consider at the public hearing on the permit. The public
hearing on. the permit will take place the following week on either
March 25 or 26 at 9:00 a.m: in Room 318, 1313 Sherman Street,
Denver. Glenda Williams, who sets the Board's agenda, will be able
to tell you or, which day the hearing will take place. She can be
reached at 303/866-3567; I'd recommend calling her after the 20th
if you are interested in attending.
I would like to allay your fears about the potential to
contaminate Canon City's water supply with the chemicals used to
eradicate leafy spurge. Recognizing that the Arkansas is a
drinking water source for Canon City, I must assume that the County
will exercise caution in applying the herbicides or pesticides
close to the River, and will follow the recommended procedures for
application. Should any of the chemicals enter the River, they
will likely be in very small quantities. If they show up in the
sampling results, even at trace levels, the compliance samples will
undergo.greater scrutiny by the Division until the problem is
resolved.
You may be comforted to know that the WQCD monitors ground
water extensively for pesticide and herbicide contamination, and in
eight years, has rarely found concentrations above detectable
limits.
I hope that I have adequately addressed your concerns. If you
have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact me at
303/692-3573. I welcome your interest in and concern for
preserving and protecting the Arkansas River and encourage you to
get involved in the source water protection program, a preventive
effort to protect public drinking water supplies.
Sincerely,
Kath7e~ en R ly, Wat rshed Coordinator
Arkansas S Rio Grand Basins
WATER QUALITY CONTR L DIV-ISION
Enclosures
cc: JGlenda Williams, NLRB
Fremont County SCD, Weed Board
Watershed File
